Jordi Savall (viola da gamba)
Popis
This is an excellent disc of baroque solo viol music from Jordi Savall. There are pieces by a variety of composers, many of whom you would expect to find in such a programme, like Marais, Sainte-Colombe and Forqueray, but there are also fine pieces by Schenck, de Machy and d'Hervelois whom I hadn't come across before. It's a lovely, varied programme and a fascinating and beautiful listen throughout. In his notes Savall stresses that commentators of the time suggested that the viol these pieces should sound close to the human voice. This leads to a freely-phrased and intimate performance which he pulls off superbly. Savall has been one of the world's very finest gamba players for decades now and his superb technique and musicianship shine through this disc. My only small reservation comes in the selected movements from the Bach Cello Suites where it seems to me that the rhythmic freedom means that Bach's essential pulse is a little lost, but it's a tiny niggle and a very personal one which may not bother others at all. The recorded sound is excellent, beautifully catching Savall's lovely viol tone (and his occasional groaning along with the music) and the presentation and notes are of Alia Vox's usual excellent, lavish standard. I warmly recommend this disc - it's another cracker from Jordi Savall.
