Porgy and Bess was written as an opera in 1934, but it was Otto Preminger's 1959 film that helped the piece achieve world fame. Several jazz musicians interpreted the music, Miles Davis succeeded with his interpretation of one of the most vital jazz albums ever. "Porgy And Bess" was recorded in New York in July and August 1958 and was based on the famous Gershwin musical. Arranger Gil Evans turned away from the complex chord changes of bebop and took a modal approach to the arrangements. The result was one of Miles' best-selling albums and, along with "Sketches Of Spain," probably the best of Davis and Evans' joint projects George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess was not a great success after its Broadway premiere in 1927. Individual titles, however, quickly became popular and popular jazz standards. Arranger Gil Evans and trumpeter Miles Davis created an arrangement in 1958 that music critics consider the best collaboration between the two musicians. As controversial as Gershwin's opera was, this recording is magical, with Davis playing some of his best solos. The reissue of MFSL makes the arrangements sound clear, open, immediate and multidimensional as never before. Miles Davis is accompanied by saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, among others, with production on the Columbia label handled by Cal Lampley and Teo Macero. Remastering for this hybrid SACD was handled by Shawn R. Britton. The limited edition of 3,000 copies with consecutive serial numbers appears in a mini-LP cover.
