Meyerbeer's most famous French operas form a tetralogy showing the interaction of faith, history, society and personal choices with strict religious and political requirements. Such is the case with "Robert Le Diable," written in collaboration with playwright Augustin Scibe and based on a 13th-century French romance: A childless woman prays to the devil and soon gives birth to a son who is strong and mischievous. Ultimately, however, he repents of his unbridled life and is welcomed back into the fold of the church. The dramatic music, the harmonies the melodramatic plot and the overwhelming stage effects made this Grand Opéra a sensation already at its premiere on November 21, 1831 and confirmed Meyerbeer as one of the leading opera composers of his time. The spectacular stage design and a top ensemble of singers, especially Bryan Hymel in the title role, make this production, shot in high-definition and surround sound, an unforgettable event for the eyes and ears.
