Tony Banks, known for his role as keyboardist in the rock band Genesis and as a solo artist, has always been fascinated by the idea of writing orchestral music. His success in composing for films led to the acclaimed Seven-A Suite for Orchestra. The intense orchestral soundscapes in Seven, Six and Five are among Tony Banks' most accomplished recordings. They combine experimentation with form and structure with a distinctive melodic character that powerfully conveys both melancholy and joy. Tony Banks is a founding member of Genesis, along with his Charterhouse disciples Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel and Anthony Phillips. After a few line-up changes, the band evolved with the addition of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett, who replaced Phillips. Genesis became one of the most important representatives of progressive rock music in the early seventies. in 1975, Peter Gabriel left the band to pursue a solo career and Phil Collins replaced Gabriel as lead singer. Genesis became one of the most commercially successful bands of the eighties and nineties with albums such as Duke and We Can't Dance. Tony Banks developed many unique keyboard and synthesizer sounds during his career. The music historian Wayne Studer described him as "the most tasteful keyboard player in prog rock". These recordings have always been prized for their eloquent and stylish orchestrations and opulent performances by world-class soloists, including Tony Banks himself, who plays piano and celeste on Five.
