Mieczysław Weinberg's personal key work Mieczysław Weinberg's haunting Holocaust drama, The Passenger, uses the autobiographical novel by Zofia Posmysz to musically process the experiences he and his family had during the war and Soviet persecution. The score was praised by Shostakovich for its "beauty and grandeur," with a story that takes place on an ocean liner bound for Brazil, where a former Auschwitz guard and one of her Polish prisoners face impossible moral conflicts and harrowing flashbacks. This acclaimed Graz Opera production movingly draws us into the raw, unimaginable madness of this imperishable moment in history. "I never tire of being enthusiastic about the opera 'The Passenger' by Mieczysław Weinberg. Three times I have already heard it, studied the score, and each time I understood better the beauty and grandeur of this music. A masterfully accomplished work in form and style" (Dmitri Shostakovich) "The Passenger" is considered perhaps the most significant, most impressive opera about the incomprehensible horrors of the concentration camps. After the "rediscovery" of the work at the staged premiere during the Bregenz Festival in 2010, Graz Opera dared to bring this deeply impressive music back to the stage. "The Passenger" is considered a key work by Weinberg, a Polish Jew who fled to the Soviet Union.
