Popis
The duo of pianist Johanna Summer and saxophonist Jakob Manz is a rare stroke of luck in young German jazz: two of its outstanding characters, virtuosic, courageous, with a broad horizon, an unmistakable signature and an understanding of jazz as a means of telling new, personal stories. Both are deeply rooted in the jazz idiom, but expand it with their own individual influences. For Johanna Summer, this is classical music in particular. With her free improvisations ranging from Bach to Ligeti, she regularly performs in major classical venues - solo and several times as a duo with Igor Levit. Jakob Manz, on the other hand, combines the melodic and rhythmic power of pop with the sensitivity of jazz in a captivating way - influenced by his deep admiration for pop-jazz border crossers such as David Sanborn or Marcus Miller and recently as a special guest of Sarah Connor on the country's biggest stages. Even if the personal biographies and influences of the duo of Johanna Summer and Jakob Manz can be used to get closer to what makes them special, their particular appeal can be felt rather than explained. For some magical reason, much of this music happens in unison, although it was not foreseeable until a fraction of a second beforehand. This testifies to the great alertness and sensitivity of the two musicians. Jakob Manz says: "When I play with Johanna as a duo, many of the habits that I have developed when playing with other musicians simply no longer work. Something new can happen all the time, you always have to stay incredibly alert. That's very inspiring!" The special magic of this musical dialog is transferred to the listener. You are amazed at the simultaneity of freedom and clarity, at the way in which two very different characters interact with each other both carefully and confidently - and at the colorful, lively, deeply felt music that emerges. A rare stroke of luck.
