In their twelve-year band history to date, Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington, known together as Darkside, have released the two albums "Psychic" (2013) and "Spiral" (2021). With their longtime friend and collaborator Tlacael Esparza as a new band member and drummer, their third album "Nothing" will be released in 2025. The result is fascinating and multi-layered. Darkside adorn "Nothing" with concise rhythms, distorted vocals and create a very unique and unusual aesthetic. To understand the development, you need to know the background story: Jaar and Harrington met in the early 2010s during their high school years in Providence. During the tour for Jaar's debut solo album, an impromptu recording session took place in a Berlin hotel room on a day off. The session was literally scorching hot, as it ended with the speakers burnt out. The room filled with smoke and the song that emerged that day became their first joint single "A1", Darkside was born. The duo took a six-year break between their first two albums. During this time, Jaar and Harrington each pursued their own creative paths: Jaar established himself as a solo artist and producer, while Harrington stirred up the underground scene in L.A. as an innovative guitarist and experimental musician and founded the rock band Taper's Choice. The story then continues in Los Angeles in the fall of 2022 when the duo booked a series of shows to reunite as a live band for the first time in eight years. Esparza joined as a permanent member and fundamentally changed the sound and energy of the band. The idea for "Nothing" was born during a search for mindfulness and Harrington's quiet moments with his newborn daughter, where he found beauty in doing nothing. For Jaar, "Nothing" became a symbol for the pervasive and overwhelming problems, unspoken feelings and stagnation of global crises such as climate change, political hypocrisy and recurring violence.
