Bach, the pious cantor of St. Thomas, and Handel, the suave opera composer, were fundamentally different in life and work, but both created great things in their musical engagement with faith. The "dream team" of soprano Sabine Devieilhe, Ensemble Pygmalion and conductor Raphaël Pichon show on the album Bach - Handel the two contemporaries in an intense dialogue with the divine. The selection of arias and recitatives reflects the range of human emotions: in "Che sento, o dio" from George Frideric Handel's opera "Giulio Cesare in Egitto," Queen Cleopatra rebels belligerently against her fatal fate and implores the assistance of the gods. In Handel's so-called "Brockes Passion," the Mother of God impotently and heartbreakingly laments the fate of her son. Johann Sebastian Bach, on the other hand, ponders melancholy about torments of conscience and forgiveness in the cantata "Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut" ("My Heart Swims in Blood"). French coloratura soprano Sabine Devieilhe already worked with the award-winning original sound ensemble Pygmalion under Raphaël Pichon during her studies. Since then, the artistic partnership has deepened - despite busy schedules on both sides and solo appearances by the singer at major international opera houses such as La Monnaie in Brussels and La Scala in Milan. Also appearing as guests in "Bach - Handel" are baritone Stéphane Degout and theorbo player Thomas Dunford.
