La Damnation de Faust with Joyce DiDonato from Strasbourg: The Berlioz Highlight with John Nelson's Dream Team
in 2017, Joyce DiDonato, under the baton of John Nelson, took on the role of Didon in the internationally acclaimed rediscovery of Berlioz's opera Les Troyens. Now comes the second chapter of this Strasbourg success story: La Damnation de Faust - another monumental stage work by the French Romantic composer, in which Joyce DiDonato takes on the role of Marguerite, flanked by Michael Spyres as Faust and Nicolas Courjal as Méphistophélès. Both colleagues have also been part of the Troyens ensemble and have since been considered a dream team with Joyce DiDonato and John Nelson.
Hector Berlioz, a romantic firebrand and original genius, described his musical realization of the legendary Goethe drama as a "dramatic legend," thus leaving the boundaries between opera and oratorio open. He was less concerned with scenic effects and more with the artistic idea of the Faust figure, who sells his soul to the devil in order to overcome human limitations. The Strasbourg audience in the Auditorium Erasme, as with the Troyens the setting for the recording and the accompanying live performances, witnessed one of the most important events for the Berlioz Year 2019.
Here the composer sets in motion a vast orchestral and vocal apparatus, focusing on the figure of Gretchen (Marguerite) and her failure to cope with the devil's evil game - an opportunity for Joyce DiDonato to heighten the expressive levels of her role from naive to vulnerable, from pitiful to the final state of madness.Prihlásenie
