The Proposition is a raw, slowly told film that paints a portrait of a young Australia where there were neither laws nor morals. The wasteland of the outback forms the backdrop of this Aussi Western directed by John Hillcoat. Nick Cave is responsible for the screenplay, camera and score. His folk melodies, written together with violinist Warren Ellis, provide a minimalist backdrop to the rugged images. The songs nestle discreetly into the film's languid texture, creating an atmosphere that couldn't be better suited to this celluloid-turned-barrenness. A soundtrack that is able to convince all along the line with its beautiful, melancholic melodies.
