With his outstanding vocal talent, Puerto Rican composer and singer Héctor Lavoe (1946-1993) was considered the top vocalist in salsa. Almost from the day of its founding, Lavoe was under contract to the New York label Fania, which had been launched in 1963 by flautist Johnny Pacheco and his lawyer Jerry Masucci. Fania surged to become the dominant label for salsa in the 1970s, making both the term and its sound known worldwide. The house band Fania All Stars, founded by Pacheco in 1968, gathered the most prominent representatives of Latin American music in the seventies, along with Héctor Lavoe, and gave concerts in front of 50,000 people. During his time with Fania, Héctor Lavoe worked intensively with trombonist Willie Colón. They recorded ten albums, fusing salsa, Afro-Cuban music, cumbia, merengue and jazz. Among the albums they recorded together was "La Voz," released in 1975, which also featured the participation of singer Ruben Blades. Its remastered reissue appears on the revived Fania label and is part of a series of reissues with exclusive highlights from the catalog.
