Where I'm Coming From is the fourth and final album by jazz organist Leon Spencer, recorded in 1973 for the Prestige label. Leon Spencer's final recording is an understated but very groovy document with keyboard solos tastefully supported by a restrained horn section and funky rhythm guitar. Covers of contemporary songs by Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Steve Wonder and The Four Tops simmer away without ever coming to a boil, but it's the Spencer originals that come to life, especially the title track that closes the album (recorded during the sessions for his previous LP, Bad Woman Walking) and which is the highlight. Oddly enough, for a Rudy Van Gelder-produced recording, the overall sound is a bit flat with very little bass, giving it a refreshingly underproduced feel.
