One of the three great BN albums of the 60s by "hard bop hero" Hank Mobley. The title track is a wonderful example of this. It interweaves gentle phrases with a soft tone that gradually gains in intensity. He is joined by his colleague Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers. This is his first collaboration with Grant Green.

Critic Leonard Feather once described Hank Mobley, who died in 1986, as the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone". That doesn't sound particularly flattering at first, but it was only intended to express the fact that Mobley's phrasing ranked between two other tenor sax champions: the "heavyweight" John Coltrane and the "lightweight" Stan Getz. On "Workout", Mobley presented himself in 1961, seconded by a quintet of young modernists, in captivating top form.
