First released in 1980, this 1968 session was a key work in the pianist's oeuvre as it ushered in his turn to the soulier style of later albums like "Grass Roots." With Charles Tolliver (trumpet), Joe Farrell (tenor and soprano saxophone), Victor Sproles (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums). Pianist and composer Andrew Hill was one of the most visionary musicians in the Blue Note stable in the 1960s. In fact, some of the twelve albums he recorded for the label between 1963 and 1970 were so far ahead of their time that they were not released until decades later. Such was the case with the brilliant album "Dance With Death," which was made in 1968 but didn't see the light of day until 1980. Hill can be heard here with six highly original original compositions between post-bop, modal jazz and avant-garde. He received excellent support for the recording from like-minded modernists such as trumpeter Charles Tolliver, saxophonist Joe Farrell, bassist Victor Sproles and drummer Bill Higgins. Blue Note Tone Poet Edition: stereo, produced by Joe Harley, mastered entirely in analog by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, RTI pressing (180g), sturdy tip-on gatefold, padded inner sleeve.
