Frank Zappa's "200 Motels" turns 50 in 2021. To celebrate the famous 1971 "Surrealistic Documentary," the original soundtrack is now being reissued once again as a remastered double CD or double LP (180g) with complete original packaging including booklet and poster, and as a Limited Super Deluxe Boxset with six CDs of the soundtrack and lots of bonus material, including demos, studio outtakes, mixes and interviews and more. The deluxe set is packaged in a 64-page hardcover book in a 12ʺ × 12ʺ slipcase. The packaging matches the original booklet, updated with insightful new annotations by Pamela Des Barres, Ruth Underwood, and Joe Travers, as well as Patrick Pending's essay from the 1997 reissue, and is packed with images from the film and its making, many of which have never been released before. The collectible also includes a special "200 Motels" keychain, a "Do-No-Disturb" motel door tag, and a full-size replica of the original movie poster. The respective tracklisiting can be found below.
The 50th Anniversary Editions were authorized by the Zappa Trust and produced by Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers. For the reissue, all recordings were remastered by audio engineering legend Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.
"200 Motels" is a surreal 1971 musical film written and directed by Frank Zappa and Tony Palmer, with music by Zappa. It brought together Zappa and his band The Mothers with Ringo Starr as "Larry The Dwarf" and Frank Zappa and Keith Moon as "The Hot Nun", featured Pamela Des Barres in her acting debut, noted actor Theodore Bikel and an incredible assortment of characters in a surreal documentary about the bizarre life of a touring musician. It combines irreverent comedic sketches, zany satire, breathtaking animation and virtuoso musical performances by The Mothers and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
The score is equally diverse, a wild hodgepodge of avant-garde rock and orchestral compositions interspersed with dialogue from the film.
