After Volbeat just released their compilation "Hokus Bonus" in July 2021, the Danish metal heroes also report back with a new album at the end of the year
"Servant Of The Mind" is the name of their eighth studio album, the follow-up to their number one album "Rewind, Replay, Rebound" from 2019.
13 songs the quartet, consisting of Michael Poulsen (vocals, guitar), Rob Caggiano (guitar), Kaspar Boye Larsen (bass) and Jon Larsen (drums) wrote and recorded for this during the shutdown, in which once again their distinctive sound signature is evident, a mix of heavy metal, psychobilly and punk'n'roll with Michael Poulsen's talent for storytelling and exceptional songwriting. "Servant Of The Mind" turns the focus more inward, but doesn't hold back one bit and doesn't sound a bit less loud and driving than previous records.
Volbeat provide the first evidence of this for the album announcement with the new single "Shotgun Blues". In it, Poulsen tells of ghostly experiences when moving into a new home. "Every time you move into a house, you bring dead people with you," he explains. "I have some really weird stuff happen to me ... not quite of this world."
Extraordinary stories like this can be found throughout the album. And so "The Sacred Stones" tells of an "earthly being who has given himself over to the dark side. It now follows a mission and comes into contact with dark forces and fallen angels." The track "The Devil Rages" deals with the idea of the devil taking a human form. In turn, the opener "Temple Of Ekur" returns to the ancient themes that appeared in earlier songs such as "The Gates Of Babylon," while "Lasse's Birgita," the epic conclusion of the record, tells about the first witch burnings in Sweden in 1471.
"Servant Of The Mind" is available as a CD and as a double LP, also as a limited deluxe double CD with the album, a bonus CD with four additional songs and a 28-page booklet. The double LP also contains the four bonus tracks. The respective tracklisting can be found below
Volbeat were founded in 2001 in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Their style moves between metal, rock'n'roll, punk rock, country and blues and has been repeatedly referred to as "Elvis metal" in reference to Elvis Presley. Since their debut album "The Strength/The Sound/The Songs" in 2005, they released six more longplayers, five of which reached number one in the Danish charts. Their last three albums also reached pole position in this country. Good conditions for album number eight: "Servant Of The Mind".
