This is a remarkable album, constantly surprising and brilliantly colored, with some acutely sensitive interplay. New Folk Songs was directly inspired by the folk music and landscape of East Anglia (a region of England). It is an exciting fusion of jazz, folk and modern electronic instruments. This is jazz-fusion at its best. It is fresh and intelligent. It is also melodic with some great tunes. The music sounds very British, and does not try and pretend it's American. The band are all excellent musicians. France in particular plays in a more funky style than most European jazz drummers. This is similar to ECM chamber jazz, but it is played with a lot more propulsion, excitement and imagination.
