After its Prague premiere in 1816, Louis Spohr's "Faust" opera was performed on all the major stages in Germany, in Italy, France and England, and was successfully included in the repertoire until well into the 1950s
Spohr had conceived this first version as a grand opera with spoken dialogues. When the Royal Opera Covent Garden ordered a fully composed version for 1852, he shortened these dialogues and recomposed them as expansive recitatives built around leitmotifs
A milestone in the development of German
romantic opera was set!
Cpo now releases a first recording of the complete recording of "Faust" in this grandiose
second version The
Bielefeld production of the spring of this year served us as the basis for the carefully corrected live recording of a concert performance in the
Oetkerhalle in
Bielefeld, famous for its acoustics
The international press was overwhelmed with enthusiasm about the achievements of the Bielefeld Opera Ensemble, so that the decision to document this event was not difficult for us.
The
musical direction is in the hands of the young, highly talented Canadian conductor Geoffrey
Moull
An opera premiere recording of the very first importance!
