Franz von Suppe has a strange fate as a composer: his brilliantly orchestrated overtures can be hummed by every child every child can hum along, but no one knows the corresponding But no one knows the operettas that go with them, apart from the occasional "Boccaccio" "Boccaccio", which appears in the playbill from time to time. It is hard to believe what he lavishly packed into this one-hour one-act opera in terms of exuberant musical ideas - from the persiflage of great operatic gestures to the snappy can-can into this one-hour one-act play.
