"Il Casanova di Federico Fellini" is the name of the film released in 1976 by the Italian film legend about the greatest seducer of all time: Giacomo Casanova, played by American Donald Sutherland. As expected, the visually sumptuous film (Oscar for Best Costumes) turned out to be one of Fellini's best. The Encyclopedia of International Film wrote: "Casanova appears as a tragicomic hero who becomes the victim of self-imposed sexual pressure to perform in a hermetic world of masks and scenery." As always, Fellini's regular composer Nino Rota provided background music for the film's whimsical, sometimes almost sinister scenes. "Il Casanova di Federico Fellini" is one of Rota's most atmospheric and enigmatic scores. The semi-classical compositions are repeatedly broken by experimental elements and modern instruments such as the electric piano. The music transports the listener into a whimsical dream world.
