A dance about the essentials of life
The relationships between living beings, existences whose paths cross, unexpected death and nature reborn are the themes Signes explores. Even before the choreography began to take shape, the painter Olivier Debré had already given the ballet a scenic framework with the design of the stage sets and provided the choreographer Carolyn Carlson with a variety of inspirations for shaping the material
The composer of the music for Signes, René Aubry, born in 1956, is a trusted companion of Carolyn Carlson. The musician and the American choreographer have been working together for almost thirty years now; the ballets Steppe and Après la pluie are exemplary successes of this artistic community, which reached another high point with the premiere of Signes at the Bastille Opera in Paris on May 27, 1997
René Aubry, who found his way to music as a self-taught composer, is also successful in other fields beyond his successes in ballet: he has an intensive artistic association with Philippe Genty's puppet theater, and is also a successful film composer - the music for La Révolte des enfants (1991), Killer Kid (1994) and Malabar Princess (2003) are from his pen.
